The former president also spent considerable time bragging about how well the limited-edition Trump-themed gold sneakers he launched last month were doing and once again demonstrated the utility of cryptocurrency.
"People are crazy about these sneakers, and you probably are too - every friend I call wants a pair of sneakers," Trump said. "I noticed that a lot of them were paid for in the new currency. 's - and... it's a new, uh, cryptocurrency, yes, cryptocurrency."
He then claimed that a pair of the "Never Surrender High Top" shoes, which originally sold for $399 a pair, were recently resold for $450,000. Decrypt was unable to verify the claim. The sneakers appear to be only available for purchase via credit card and not any form of cryptocurrency.
The former reality TV host admits that his recent experiences in the cryptocurrency space have led him to embrace an asset class he was once skeptical of.
"If you think about it, it's another form of currency," Trump said. "I've said I want a currency... I don't want people to leave the dollar. I feel that way, but I'll tell you this — [cryptocurrencies] have had a life."
In typical fashion, however, the Republican presidential candidate took a dark turn, warning that any country that considers moving from a dollar-backed economy to one more integrated with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies would be a disservice to the U.S. pose a near-apocalyptic threat to global dominance. .
"I hate it when countries give up the dollar, but I will not allow countries to give up the dollar," Trump said. "When we lose that standard, it's like losing a revolutionary war. It's like losing a revolutionary war for our country." It's as hard as a war."
